Stomach ulcers (gastric ulcers) are open sores that develop on the lining of the stomach. Stomach Ulcers can also occur on the intestine just beyond the stomach. These are called small intestinal ulcers and caused when the protective mucus that lines the wall of the intestine breaks down. This allows bacteria, stomach acid and digestive enzymes to damage the wall itself.
The most common symptom of a stomach ulcer is a persistent burning or gnawing pain in the centre of the abdomen (tummy). It must also be noted that not all stomach ulcers bring immediate pain.
Some people experience:
- Nausea (feeling sick)
